Bright Idea

elf on the shelf holding light bulbs with message to be nice and bright idea How many elves does it take to change a light bulb?  With Christmas only days away the boys needed a reminder and the elves delivered with the bright idea to be nice written on light bulbs.  All while hanging from a light fixture.  I’m a firm believer that holidays, any holidays, are sometimes too much for children to handle and ironically parents tend to have expectations of best behavior surrounding these special events.  Ugh.  Come on December 26, or even 10am December 25, I can’t take much more of this. Elf Sized Cinnamon Rolls, Yum!

Elf on the shelf sitting in front of a plate of elf sized cinnamon rolls We woke up to tiny cinnamon rolls compliments of our elves.  Of course the baked rolls were covered and the unbaked rolls were stashed in the refrigerator to prevent any disasters with the dog or cats.  They included a note about how to bake them.  Such a fun treat!  Below is a rough how we think they did it in case any other elves need some inspiration.  Elf on the shelf idea, cinnamon roll directions elf sized cinnamon rolls

How to Bake Easy Mini Cinnamon Rolls

  • Use a can of refrigerated cinnamon rolls
  • Preheat oven to 400′
  • Cut each roll into thirds and re-roll into three tiny cinnamon rolls
  • Place rolls into greased pan, our elves used a mini muffin pan.
  • Our rolls baked for 8 minutes but time may vary depending on your stove, pan used, and brand of rolls used.
  • After baking apply icing if included with your rolls.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Boy elf on the shelf with goatee dresses up in an elf skirt for fun.Why should the girls get to have all of the fun?  Our neighbor had some extra elf skirts so we left them out to see if our elves would play.  The next morning they were all dressed up.  We wonder if they wore them back to the North Pole that night.  Lucky nutcrackers next to them are now sporting skirts.

Surprise!

Elf on the shelf hiding in shoe baskets, elicited a scream when the kids found them. This may be my favorite of 2013.  While the boys were at school the elves took up hiding spots in and around the shoe baskets.  My 5 year old let out a scream when he pulled his basket out and found Henry in there.  They were so surprised and this took little effort for the elves.  Between being super easy and the enormous reaction it got it will be hard to beat!

Do You See What I See?

Elf ont he shelf hanging with frames with googly or wiggly eyes on pictures and the elvesHa-ha!  Our elves thought they were pretty funny sticking wiggly googly eyes onto pictures of the boys, and themselves!  I’m not sure if they learned this from other elves at the North Pole or if they did a Google image search.  Even magical elves need a little inspiration now and then.

Elf on the Shelf Fail

elf on the Shelf staging gone bad when the cat knocked over the box of froot loops the elves were staged on. And then there are days when it just doesn’t work out.  What you see here is the handy work of our cats.  I am pretty sure the elves would have staged themselves cleverly.  Perhaps Ralphie with his head in the cereal bag, legs kicking out of the top.  Henry the Moose clinging onto the side of the box.  Roderick impatiently waiting to dive head first into the bag.  Maybe they would have used the Froot Loops to spell out a word like SUGAR!

We’ll never know for sure because a crash was heard.  Then I was awakened by my child telling me Roderick was in danger.  If you recall the day the elves returned they left a note saying no early birds and not to wake up parents unless the elves were in danger.  They have done marvelously well not waking us up by the way.

Down the stairs I went and there was an elf on the tile.  We used tongs to lift Roderick from the floor and everything seemed fine.  Except now what might have been letters made from Froot Loops were scattered across the table.  The cuteness the elves had prepared was now a rather comical scene and the boys were happy to have the annual treat of super sugary cereal for breakfast.

Forget Syrup, Let Them Drink Apple Juice

Elf on the shelf wrapped around a Pinnacle farms Organic Apple Juice bottle in the refrigerator drinking the juice with straws. Our elves proved they have excellent taste today.  They could have indulged in pure maple syrup, corn sugar syrup, or agave nectar but they went straight for the Pinnacle Organic apple juice.  It is delicious locally grown apple juice and a special treat for the boys, who were not very happy to be sharing with the elves.  Especially since Ralphie had his feet in the bottle.  The boys were pleased that the milk was left untouched.  No need to fear elf pee in the milk this year…yet!

Elf on the Shelf With Miniature Balsa Wood Glider Planes

Close up of miniature balsa wood glider plane left by Elf on the Shelf being held by child's fingersOur elves left an assortment of elf sized balsa wood glider planes this morning.  Including the tiniest wood plane we have ever seen!  It was quite a sight to see them suspended from the paper chains they made earlier in the season while holding onto these adorable planes.Elf on the shelf, with multiple elves, sitting on paper chains and holding onto tiny miniature balsa wood glider planes.Below are some close ups of the planes.  Elf on the shelf holding a mini balsa wood glider plane, close up.

Official Elf Reports and Colorful Fun Bands

Elf on the shelf, with multiple elves, sitting in a pile of tiny colorful rubber bands for bracelet making. Next to the elves are official elf reports from Magnolia Creative company, including new for 2013 smaller reports to be filled out for the elves. Behind the elves is a giant 6" diameter brightly colored slinky stretched into an arch.Groovy!  The elves brought the very much coveted materials for making rubber band bracelets.  So many rubber bands that Roderick was able to make a “snow angel” in them.  Rainbow Loom and Fun Bands are all the rage at my kids’ school.  Unfortunately they remind me of the dreaded “silly bands” of a few years back.  These new bands will be much easier to vacuum, something about that pleases me.  I estimate that 97% of the bands pictured will be long gone by Valentine’s Day.  Boys and girls alike are nuts for these things, so much that they are no longer allowed in the classroom at our local school.  I began seeing bags of tiny rubber bands in stores a few weeks ago and thought, with 2 boys, we would not be caught up in the fad.  Was I wrong!  I think it is awesome that this has been a unisex craze.

This was a bonus day, the elves also brought Official Elf Reports today.  Somehow they both managed to score “nice” list standing.  I am certain one should have been placed, at least temporarily, on the naughty list.  Magnolia Creative Company has updated the Official Elf Report for 2013 and they added a clever twist.  It now includes a report the kids can fill out about the elf’s performance.  So fun! You can find the reports here.  The download link is in the word “here” above the report graphic on the MCC page.Alf on the shelf sitting in colorful ruber bands for bracelet making.
