Year 5, Elf on the Shelf 2015

The elves are back!  This is our fifth year with elves, known as Elf on the Shelf.  Our elves have been known to replicate ideas that other elves have done (I’m certain they browse Pinterest) and they have delighted us with some completely original ideas too.  They do a variety of things, as simple as hiding themselves away for a good round of hide and seek and ranging to the downright complicated.  They occasionally bring small gifts and treats.  Our elves have established a few tried and true traditions.  Each year they deliver an advent calendar, an ornament for the tree, they bring us the most delicious hot cocoa mix, and they make a special treat for the morning of Christmas Eve.  Over the years there have been a handful of accidental touches and impacts by flying objects that can knock an elf across a room.  Our remedy is a sincere apology and a light sprinkle of cinnamon.  Check back to see what Ralphie, Henry and Roderick have planned for 2015.

Catching up with 2014!

Oh Dear!  As I’m getting ready to share the latest and greatest from our elves, I noticed that I never wrapped up 2014.  December must have been a doozy around here.  Anyhow, here’s the rest of what our elves were up to last year.  My favorite of the bunch has to be the craft stick bows and q-tip arrows.  I’d say the elves peeked into my Pinterest Board and grabbed this idea from The Brooding Hen.  I’m just happy someone is acting on things I pin because I certainly don’t go beyond pinning ideas most of the time.

Elf on the Shelf, Marshmallow Spa Day!

Elf on the shelf with marshmallow bath in the sink

A spa day for an Elf on the Shelf wouldn’t be complete without a marshmallow bubble bath in the sink.  In preparation for the luxurious soak they had hung blue paper snowflakes around the bathroom the day before.  I’d love to see the snowflakes again another year but the marshmallows made a horrible mess once the kids got to them.

Elf on the Shelf Brings Elf Sized Kendamas

Kendamas!  The boys were delighted to see that the elves brought kendamas today.  They are the smallest that we have ever seen. Miniature, micro, however you want to say it, they are tiny playable elf-sized kendamas.  Ralphie is doing the unicorn trick and it looks like Henry landed a spike.  Roderick didn’t quite land his trick yet.  The boys are enjoying this North Pole exclusive.3 elves sitting with mini kendamas elf on the shelf with a miniature kendama doing unicorn, where the kendama looks like a horn on his forehead miniature kendama between the hands of elf on the shelf close up of a miniature wooden kendama in the hands of an elf on the shelf

Hard to Find Elf on the Shelf

3 elves stacked on each others shoulders hidden behind a sofaOur elves have been hiding in more challenging places this year.  In fact one morning the boys spent so much time looking for the elves they forgot to open their advent calendars until after school.  Amazing!  The elves left a note saying they were hiding the first time they were out of sight, that way the boys wouldn’t worry that they had not returned.  They have been completely concealed in cabinets and drawers, tucked behind furniture, wedged in crevices.  They are illuminated in the photos but while we searched for them they were in shadows and tough to see.  My favorite was the day two of the elves hid in the cabinet with cereal bowls, the other was tucked into the flatware drawer.  One child yelled in surprise when he found the last one in the drawer. Child two jumped about 6 inches when he reached into the drawer and only saw the elf when he was about to touch it.  Elf on the Shelf can be fun and challenging for children of all ages.elf ont he shelf note telling kids they are hiding and challenging them to find them in 5 minutes or lesself on the shelf hiding in silverware drawer elf on the shelf hiding elf on the shelf tucked into crevice between the wall and a basket to hide. elf on the shelf tucked into holiday decorations for a hiding spot

Easy Elf on the Shelf in Plain Sight

Our elves are often sitting out in plain sight.  Whether they come bearing gifts or are just sitting around the boys love trying to find them each time they move.  Now that the boys are older the elves have been hiding out of sight, but they still spend a bit of time out in the open.  Proof that elves do not need to put on elaborate displays every morning to be fun. easy elf on the shelf standing on mantel next to nutcrakers elf on the shelf tucked in bed with a panda pillow pet elf on the shelf sitting on a top bunk with a cat sitting next to it elf on the shelf situated atop a tin pumpkin elf on the shelf sitting next to miniature trees for decoration in childrens' roomelf on the shelf sitting on a decorative popcorn tin

Elf on the Shelf Traditions

This is the 4th year our elves, Ralphie, Henry, and Roderick, have spent the holiday season with us.  In that time they have forged some traditions.  Some things the boys look forward to each year are advent calendars, ornaments, and a special treat cooked up by the elves near the end of their stay.  They have already delivered ornaments and advent calendars this year.  I wonder what deliciousness they will cook up in a few weeks.Elf on the Shelf with ornaments. Return of the Elves, 2014!

Elf on the Shelf Thanksgiving Return

Year 4 began with a warm, gooey pot of chocolate fondue.  My boys, just turned 10 and about to be 7, had been anxiously awaiting the return of our elves, Ralphie, Henry, and Roderick.  They arrived Thanksgiving morning as expected.  Thankfully the boys heeded the elves’ advice and waited until we were downstairs to fire up the fondue pot.  So much fun!

Bright Idea

elf on the shelf holding light bulbs with message to be nice and bright idea How many elves does it take to change a light bulb?  With Christmas only days away the boys needed a reminder and the elves delivered with the bright idea to be nice written on light bulbs.  All while hanging from a light fixture.  I’m a firm believer that holidays, any holidays, are sometimes too much for children to handle and ironically parents tend to have expectations of best behavior surrounding these special events.  Ugh.  Come on December 26, or even 10am December 25, I can’t take much more of this.
